Position

I am a Reader in Statistics in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Glasgow.

Research news

An article, published in Science magazine (1), provides new evidence that modern humans dispersed from Africa along the southern coast of Asia about 60,000–70,000 years ago.  My colleagues and I studied variation in the complete mitochondrial genome sequences of a number of Orang Asli subjects from the Malaysian peninsula, along with data already published from Native Australians and Indians, to reach our conclusion.  The article has been widely reported in the press (e.g. 2–6).

Teaching

In 2019–20, I shall lecture an undergraduate and Masters course in Statistical Genetics (STATS 4074/5011) and the Masters course in Probability (STATS 5024).

I am class head for level 4 (Senior Honours) in Statistics.

Research

I work on statistical inference of demography from DNA sequence data, particularly prehistoric human demography as inferred from mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation. Click for an updated skeleton phylogeny of human mtDNA [jpeg file] [eps file].

Another research interest is in phylogenetic inference for functional data.

I currently advise two PhD students (Suzy Whoriskey and Laura Stewart). My completed PhD students are Noel Thomson, Robin Young, Maarya Sharif, Colette Mair, George Cairns, Irene Marinas, Tushar Ghosh and Alasdair McIntosh. My completed MSc by Research students are Maarya Sharif, Stuart MacIntyre and Mhairi Kerr.

My collaborators include Prof. Antonio Torroni (University of Pavia), Prof. Martin Richards (University of Leeds), Dr Antonio Salas (University of Santiago de Compostela), Dr Luisa Pereira (University of Porto) and Prof. Hans–Jürgen Bandelt (University of Hamburg).
